Beautiful Karma follows CJ, a nineteen-year-old orphan who digs the king's fields until his shovel turns up a rusted box holding a pendant on a chain. That same evening he hides a hunted fairy named Ariana from Princess Celine, and the chain answers her killing blast by throwing it back at her — a commoner beating a royal in the open street. Exiled from the capital, CJ sets out south for the goddess Selena, crosses the Deadly Forest, and finds a case holding two swords: a white blade that comes willingly and a black one that refuses him. Hunted across the outer cities by the king's winged co-captains Camila and Justin, and bound to Ariana by a soul bond that heals him as fast as he breaks, CJ learns the swords carry the life-force of two dead prodigies — and that they chose him because he is their son. Celine, meanwhile, discovers her father is caging fairies to keep a war from reigniting, and that the fugitive she has been ordered to kill is the boy she has fallen in love with. When CJ finally reaches the throne room, the man who buried his parents recognizes the stance before he recognizes the face.
